International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) meets at Europa-Park

Rust,Germany: Digital worlds and their use in theme parks On 11 April 2016, top levels of management from the European theme park industry met at Europa-Park for the second Digital Skills Network.

The members of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) were not just here to discuss current developments, as the topic of digitalisation was also on the agenda − meaning that this meeting of the IAAPA had a particular focus on digital progress and the diverse ways in which theme parks can take advantage of this trend. A joint dinner with 12 Members of the European Parliament provided a fitting setting for the international event.

Visitors to Europa-Park have been able to experience a world first since September 2015: On the “Alpenexpress Coastiality” rollercoaster in the Austrian themed area, guests can enjoy a thrilling journey through virtual reality. Following on from the huge success of the world’s first virtual reality rollercoaster, this year the popular YoungStar rollercoaster “Pegasus” in the Greek themed area will also be equipped with this innovative technology. This VR project implemented by MackMedia is a model example for the industry.

Besides Europa-Park, Disneyland Paris, the Spanish theme park Port Aventura and Liseberg in Sweden also presented the developments they have made in terms of digitalisation at the IAAPA event.

In the evening, representatives from over 40 international theme parks and industry suppliers welcomed 12 Members of the European Parliament from Strasbourg and engaged in a lively discussion covering topics such as future prospects and the promotion of digital products and services. Michael Kreft von Byern, representative of the management board at Europa-Park: ‘The fact that this event was attended by Members of the European Parliament demonstrates just how important the theme park industry is for international politics.’

Europa-Park will be open in the 2016 summer season from 19th March to 6th November from 9am to 6pm daily (longer opening hours during peak season).
